My New American Friends

For 3 years my wife has been friends with an older Yugoslavian woman. They have a social dinner twice a year where the husbands attend. It's all good.

Just recently they both got their US citizenships and had a party where all their friends were invited. About half were Yugo/Slav/Croat/Hungarian/Whatever (one gentleman looked like Miloslavic) the other were American.

They are an engineer and an architect. Their friends are all professional, Masters degrees and such.

The topic turned to the test they had to take and the American with his Masters told us how difficult the questions were. Questions such as:
  1. Who designed and produced the first flag,
  2. How many justices are on the Supreme Court.
The women were in the kitchen and when I pressed for more, questions, the American couldn't remember any.

I was the oddball. I knew the answers. They were simple.

I can understand a non-citizen not-knowing, but someone who grew up here?

I don't know where this country is headed, but there is an ignorant crowd driving it.

UPDATE:
A quick online search resulted is this:
Below are a few sample questions from the U.S. Citizenship Test:
  1. How many stars are there in our flag?
  2. What color are the stars on our flag?
  3. What do the stars on the flag mean?
  4. How many stripes are there in the flag?
  5. What date is the Day of Independence?
  6. Independence from whom?
  7. What country did we fight during the revolutionary war?
  8. Who was the first president of the United States?
  9. What do we call a change of the constitution?
Did any of you readers not know a single answer? I bet not.
